Virgin Islands National Park

Covering the majority of the island of St. John, Virgin Islands National Park features breathtaking beaches, tropical forests, and relics from the island history.

Virgin Islands National Park's hills, valleys and beaches are breath-taking. However, within its 7,000 plus acres on the island of St. John is the complex history of civilizations - both free and enslaved - dating back more than a thousand years, all who utilized the land and the sea for survival.

Within its borders lie protected bays of crystal blue-green waters teeming with coral reef life, white sandy beaches shaded by seagrape trees, coconut palms, and tropical forests providing habitat for over 800 species of plants. To these amazing natural resources, add relics from the Pre-Colombian Amerindian Civilization, remains of the Danish Colonial Sugar Plantations, and reminders of African Slavery and the Subsistence Culture that followed during the 100 years after Emancipation - all part of the rich cultural history of the park and its island home.

The National Park Foundation encourages and promotes local fundraising support at individual national park sites. Friends of Virgin Islands National Park is a nonprofit partner of the National Park Service dedicated to the preservation and protection of the natural and cultural resources of Virgin Islands National Park.
