Stephen Lockhart, M.D., Ph.D
A board-certified anesthesiologist, with 40 years of experience in healthcare, Stephen Lockhart, M.D., Ph.D., served as chief medical officer (CMO) for Northern California-based Sutter Health, a not-for-profit health system caring for 3.5 million patients, one in every 100 Americans. As CMO, he had responsibility for quality, patient safety, research, and education.
His passion for equitable health outcomes fueled his leadership efforts to provide equitable care and culminated in founding the Sutter Health Institute for Advancing Health Equity, a nationally recognized entity focused on research, policy, and innovation.
A Rhodes Scholar, Stephen earned his master’s in economics at Oxford University and received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Cornell University. An avid climber and backpacker, Stephen has a long-standing passion for providing environmental science education and introducing the U.S. National Parks to an increasingly diverse population of people. He served on the Second Century Commission for National Parks and the Parks Forward Commission for California State Parks.
His nonprofit board service has included the ECRI Institute, Cunniff Dixon Foundation (palliative care), NatureBridge, National Parks Conservation Association, Land Trust Alliance, REI, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, EO Wilson Biodiversity Foundation and Parks California, a statewide nonprofit dedicated to supporting California's parks and public lands.
He currently serves on the public company boards of Molina Healthcare, West Pharmaceutical Services and NRC Health.
