Transportation Scholars
As the population of the United States continues to increase, transportation issues in national parks will also increase, further straining an agency already stretched by small budgets and over-worked staff. The National Park Foundation’s Transportation Scholars program helps to relieve some of that tension by providing parks with transportation professionals who aid the parks in developing and sustaining alternative transportation systems as a means of reducing congestion in park units. The Scholars also assist parks with general transportation planning and analysis while working with local communities to implement a variety of environmental and traffic studies.

The Transportation Scholars program is important because it supports and promotes sustainable transportation solutions that help preserve park resources and enhance visitors’ experience. The program is designed to place transportation scholars, individuals with substantial knowledge and expertise in transportation planning and related areas, at a park site for six to 12 months to work on transportation related projects.
