Volunteer

“Everyone can be great because anyone can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t even have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve…You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love…”

– Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Each year thousands of people take time to show their love for National Parks through volunteering. In 2001 alone, 120,000 volunteers contributed 4.4 million hours of work—a contribution valued at over $67 million. At a time when many National Parks are strained by lack of resources and staff, volunteers provide an invaluable service and help ensure that these special places will continue to be cherished for generations to come.

From clearing trails to assisting archaeologists to providing visitor information, Volunteers-in-Parks—or VIPs—perform a range of tasks at different National Parks across the country. Learn more about the Volunteer Opportunities at a park near you by visiting the National Park Service’s VIP site. We’re proud of the accomplishments of VIPs and want to inspire others to join their ranks.
